Managing Time Using The Pomodoro Technique

By FocusMe Team on 10 October 2016

You will be surprised to know that a tomato can actually help you save time. Francesco Cardillo discovered a time management technique when he was in his freshman year at college in the late 80s. He was using a tomato shaped timer at that time to manage time when he was studying. He was able to concentrate better on his studies when he studies in segments. Therefore, he came up with the Pomodoro technique appropriately named after the Italian translation of a tomato.

What Is Pomodoro Technique?

Pomodoro technique is not a complicated way of time management. It is quite an easy to understand and implementable technique that can also help enhance productivity. It is implemented by breaking down a large and extensive task into a series of smaller tasks where each work interval is called a Pomodoro. These segments are spaced with short breaks in between as well.

The short segments of doing work make you more productive and the breaks in between keep you relaxed in order to maintain your focus during the work intervals. It is a much better way for achieving consistent good quality and meeting deadlines easily.

How to Implement the Pomodoro Technique?

The Pomodoro technique is nothing technical. You don’t need any applications, software or tools to adopt it in your life. All you need is a timer which is almost available in every mobile regardless of being a smartphone or not. However, here are five steps to easily make use of the technique to manage time:

  • Select the task that you need to complete
  • Set your timer for 25 minutes (the timer tool you are going to use can be referred to as the Pomodoro)
  • Keep working until the timer rings and then record this time on a sheet of paper
  • Take a break of 5 minutes
  • It is recommended that after each 4 Pomodoros, you can indulge in a longer break

Why the Pomodoro Technique Works?

The technique is quite simple but it works. It is a great way to get yourself rid of distractions and interruptions. The simplicity allows people to implement the technique easily into their daily work routine. Moreover, it uses no complicated technology so it can be used by everyone. It also works for all kind of tasks. It allows you to concentrate without any unwanted interruptions and increases your productivity without leaving any impact on your health or depleting your energy level.

The Pomodoro technique does not use any technology but requires a certain amount of discipline from the user. It is your responsibility that you follow the Pomodoro schedule you have set for yourself. Nothing works if you don’t put your will and effort into it.

Regular use of the Pomodoro technique will make you more used to it. Better time management and increased productivity also lead to personal satisfaction with work and you will eventually start enjoying doing work
