Welcome to the world of Acara, where collaboration, innovation, and a supportive culture define the workplace. Today, we’re diving into the story of Cara Sellon, a Recruitment Specialist at Acara Solutions, as she shares her journey, her role, and what makes Acara such a special place to work.

Life Before Acara

Cara’s journey began in East Aurora where she grew up before moving to West Seneca five years ago, both suburbs of Buffalo, NY. She attended the University at Albany and Buffalo State University, earning the foundation for her professional career. After graduating, Cara entered the world of recruiting in 2015 at a small staffing agency in Buffalo. Her career path then took her into corporate recruiting, where she gained valuable insight into internal hiring processes. Eventually, a referral from a colleague led her to Acara—a move that would prove transformative.

Reflecting on her early roles, Cara credits her first job as a recruiter for teaching her the full recruitment lifecycle—from sourcing candidates to onboarding. Her corporate recruiting experience added another layer of expertise by allowing her to collaborate closely with hiring managers and understand internal hiring strategies. These experiences equipped her with the skills and perspective needed for success at Acara.

Life at Acara

As a Recruitment Specialist, Cara’s days are dynamic and diverse. She sources and screens candidates for clients across industries such as HR, accounting, sales, manufacturing, and technical fields. What sets Acara apart for Cara is the unparalleled support from her team. “The support we have for each other is unlike any other experience I’ve had in the professional world,” she shares.

What excites Cara about her work? The variety! She thrives on tackling new challenges and stepping outside of her comfort zone. However, recruiting isn’t without its hurdles. “There are a lot of ‘ups and downs’ in recruiting,” she admits. “Staying positive through these challenges is key.”

Cara also notes how advancements in artificial intelligence have revolutionized recruitment processes in recent years. Tools like AI have streamlined sourcing and screening candidates—a trend she expects will only grow over the next decade.

Why Acara?

For Cara, it’s all about culture and collaboration. The team at Acara feels like family, offering humor and support to navigate daily challenges together. “Seeing my team is what I look forward to every day,” she says.

Life Outside of Acara

Outside of work, Cara’s life is just as full and rewarding. Recently married in October 2024, she balances a busy family life with three children aged 7, 4, and 1. Her mornings start with getting everyone ready for school and work—a feat that requires meticulous planning and organization.

Cara’s passion lies in being a mom. “My kids are what motivate me in my career,” she explains. She strives to be both a role model and provider for them while maintaining balance through careful scheduling.

On days off, you’ll find Cara exploring events around Buffalo with her kids or indulging in hobbies like shopping, music, and movies. If given unlimited time or money? Scotland tops her travel wish list—both for its historical allure (a favorite of her husband) and family heritage.

Why Acara Stands Out

Cara describes Acara in one word: collaborative. From its supportive culture to its innovative use of technology in recruitment processes, Acara provides an environment where employees can thrive professionally while feeling valued personally.

For anyone considering joining the team or looking to learn more about life at Acara, Cara’s story is a testament to what makes this company exceptional: a commitment to people—both clients and employees—and a collaborative spirit that drives success.

Meet Kimberly (Kim) Starner, Director of Client Solutions at Acara Solutions, an Aleron company. With nearly a decade of experience in the staffing industry, Kim’s journey from a recruiting intern to a key player in client relationships showcases the growth opportunities and dynamic environment at Acara.

Buffalo Roots to Global Connections

Born and raised in Buffalo, NY, Kim’s career path began at Niagara University, where she earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Marketing. Her early professional experiences in recruiting and office management laid the foundation for her future success at Acara.

“I have always worked with people and managing relationships,” Kim explains. “Whether it was recruiting financial planning interns, working with financial planners, or working directly with clients, I have always been in a position to make a positive impact.”

Evolving with the Industry

In her role as Director of Client Solutions, Kim manages relationships with key accounts, both locally and nationally. She ensures that recruitment teams meet customer needs and drives contractor satisfaction to reduce attrition.

Kim has witnessed significant changes in the talent and staffing industry, particularly in technology. “Technology has evolved greatly in the last decade, especially with AI,” she notes. “Although technology has made recruitment easier, it will never be able to replace the strong connections and relationships we build with candidates, customers, and each other!”

The Acara Advantage

What makes Acara stand out as an employer? For Kim, it’s the people. “I have great leadership, a great team, and great colleagues. Throughout my tenure here, I have met some of my best friends,” she shares.

This sentiment aligns with Acara’s parent company Aleron’s values of being supportive, principled, accountable, engaged, transparent, and all-in.

Work-Life Balance and Personal Growth

Outside of work, Kim is an avid traveler, always planning her next adventure. “Some of my favorite places are Niagara on the Lake, Bermuda, and Capri,” she reveals. Her ideal day off involves reading a good book, going for a hike, or treating herself to a spa day.

Looking Ahead

As Kim continues to grow with Acara, she remains excited about the unpredictable nature of the staffing industry. “We work in the people business and people are unpredictable. No two days are the same and there is always a new challenge to solve,” she says.

Kim’s story exemplifies Acara’s commitment to fostering talent and building strong relationships, both internally and with clients. It’s this human-centric approach that sets Acara apart in the evolving landscape of workforce solutions.

From the ski slopes of Whistler to his bustling desk in Mississauga, Massimo’s story is one of resilience, curiosity, and a desire to connect with others.

Life Before Acara

From Mississauga to Whistler
Massimo grew up in Mississauga, Ontario, and later moved to Whistler, British Columbia, where he cultivated a love for hiking, skiing, and snowboarding. After a two-year adventure filled with mountain life and camaraderie, a torn ACL led him back to Ontario, where he now resides in Milton with his wife and their beloved dog, Dookie Doo.

Educational Journey
Massimo studied Business, Marketing, and Sales at Sheridan College, where his knack for connecting with people set the foundation for his recruitment career.

Career Beginnings
Retail management and fine dining taught Massimo the importance of professionalism, adaptability, and building rapport—skills that prepared him perfectly for recruitment. Following multiple coffee chats with Acara’s Nigel Hapuarachchi, Massimo joined the team as a Recruitment Specialist, a position he has held and grown in for the past four years.

Life at Acara

Growing with Acara
Since joining in December 2020, Massimo’s career has flourished. Recently promoted to Senior Recruitment Specialist in May 2024, he credits Acara’s supportive and communicative environment for his growth.

A Day in the Life

The Acara Difference
What sets Acara apart? “The strong communication throughout the organization,” Massimo notes. From the inclusive Learners Club to cultural diversity discussions, Acara fosters connectivity and values every voice. Events like summer barbecues and holiday parties provide opportunities to build relationships beyond the office.

Challenges and Rewards

The Thrill of the Job
For Massimo, recruitment is a win-win: solving client challenges while helping candidates achieve their career dreams. “Helping people find work brings a lot of meaning to my job,” he says.

Navigating Niche Roles
The industry isn’t without challenges—finding candidates for niche positions can be tough. However, Massimo’s solution-oriented mindset keeps him motivated to deliver results.

The Future of Recruitment
As AI becomes more integrated into recruitment tools, Massimo is optimistic about how technology will enhance the hiring process.

Life Outside of Work

Morning Routine
Each morning starts with a walk with Dookie, a rescue dog from St. Lucia who has adapted to Canadian winters with the help of a cozy jacket.

Passions and Hobbies
From perfecting 25+ tricks with Dookie to making fresh tomato sauce (80 jars last year!), Massimo’s life is full of activity. A lifelong Toronto Maple Leafs fan and multi-instrumentalist, he spends his downtime at concerts and cheering on his team.

Travel Dreams
New Zealand holds a special place in Massimo’s heart, and he hopes to revisit its breathtaking landscapes—or embark on a ski adventure in Japan.

One Word to Describe Acara?

Fulfilling.

Final Thoughts

Massimo’s journey at Acara is a testament to the company’s commitment to fostering growth, encouraging connection, and empowering employees to thrive. Whether he’s solving recruitment challenges or building relationships over lunch, Massimo exemplifies what it means to be All In at Acara.

In our “All-In at Acara” series, we’re thrilled to spotlight Kelly Wirt, a Program Manager at Acara Solutions who brings her unique blend of experience and enthusiasm to her role. Here’s Kelly’s story—from her early days in education to her exciting journey in recruitment with us here at Acara.

Life Before Acara

Kelly is a proud Floridian, born and raised in Venice, FL, who found her way to Orlando for college before settling down in the Melbourne area. She graduated from the University of Central Florida with a degree in Elementary Education. After teaching elementary school for a few years, Kelly began to question if teaching was the right fit for her in a post-COVID world.

It was a friend who had made a similar career switch that encouraged her to explore recruiting. After finding an opportunity on LinkedIn, she applied, landed an interview with Acara, and the rest, as they say, is history.

A Day in the Life at Acara

As Program Manager at Acara, Kelly’s role is multifaceted. She handles job orders, manages contract labor, and ensures clear communication for one of Acara’s large accounts, all while continuing to recruit for multiple accounts in Florida.

What attracted her to Acara was its openness to giving entry-level candidates a chance and its commitment to training and professional growth. She’s been with Acara ever since and has grown to take on more leadership responsibilities. Today, she’s not just recruiting but also coordinating customer meetings, attending networking events, and helping organize job fairs across the area.

Kelly appreciates the way Acara fosters a human-centered approach in recruitment—an aspect that’s only grown more valuable in an increasingly automated industry. Acara’s people-focused approach allows her to make real connections with candidates and clients alike.

What Makes the Job Special

Kelly’s days are never quite the same, which is part of what makes her role so rewarding. Some days, she’s meeting with clients and learning about their manufacturing processes. Other days, she’s on the phone with candidates, connecting them with exciting opportunities. Each challenge is an opportunity to problem-solve, build relationships, and ultimately help others succeed in their careers.

While managing client expectations in a fluctuating job market can be challenging, Kelly thrives in finding that perfect balance between candidate needs and employer requirements. She feels that her strong organizational skills and adaptability are essential to her success.

Life Outside of Work

When she’s not at the office, Kelly’s mornings start early with a peaceful breakfast and a walk with her mini dachshund, Goose. She loves spending quality time with her husband, their cat Shadow, and of course, Goose. A fitness enthusiast, she’s active at the gym and a huge fan of UCF football, concerts, and exploring new places. Family is also incredibly important to her; she frequently visits loved ones across the state and has a beautiful new niece who she adores.

Kelly’s ideal day off involves starting with a coffee shop visit with her husband and dog, followed by a relaxing day at the beach. And if she ever had unlimited time and resources? She’d be off exploring Europe, with Spain, Greece, and Germany at the top of her list!

Why Acara?

For Kelly, Acara’s company culture is a huge part of what makes it a fantastic place to work. She loves the collaborative environment, where employees are encouraged to connect and engage across departments. She’s especially fond of the organization’s commitment to initiatives like DEIB (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging) and employee recognition programs. These touches make her feel valued and help Acara foster a positive and inclusive workplace.

When asked to describe Acara in one word, Kelly chose collaborative—and it’s clear why. Whether she’s working alongside her Florida Key Team, learning from her peers, or problem-solving for clients, she’s grateful to be part of a company that prioritizes partnership and communication at every level.

Kelly Wirt’s journey from teaching to talent acquisition is a story of growth, discovery, and resilience. We’re proud to have her as part of the Acara team, where she’s making a difference one placement at a time.

This month’s “All-In At Acara” employee spotlight features Megan Tomkins, our Director of Recruiting who works out of our Melbourne, Florida office. Megan started as a sales/development representative in 2018, and moved her way to Director of Recruiting. She’s always been driven to help people and enjoys the human element in her day-to-day interactions. Read on to learn more about Megan’s deep sense of purpose.

Life Before Acara

I grew up on Grand Island, NY, near Buffalo, and currently live in sunny Melbourne, FL, along the Space Coast. After graduating from Canisius College with a BA in Psychology and Criminal Justice, plus a minor in Forensics, I wasn’t sure of my career path. I took on roles in credit analysis and sales management, which taught me valuable skills, but I was still searching for something more fulfilling. That’s when I came across an ad for a sales and recruiting development representative at Acara, and the rest is history!

The opportunity came through Acara’s ExceedCX Training Program, a centralized program that trained new hires for sales and recruiting development, before placing them in locations nationwide. Moving to Florida alone as a recent college graduate, I juggled a second job as a server to afford living on my own. Fortunately, I met my husband, Drew, who had also relocated from Detroit for his job in law enforcement.

Life at Acara

I currently serve as the Director of Recruiting at Acara. My responsibilities include leading a team of recruiters and program/account managers, providing support, and ensuring we meet and exceed hiring quotas. I also recruit, which makes me unique as I’m the only director who recruits at Acara.

What sets Acara apart is the transparency and direct communication with our C-Suite team. Our voices are heard, and there are opportunities for growth—which I’ve personally experienced since joining in 2018. Starting as a Sales/Development Representative, I moved up to Recruitment Specialist, Account Manager, Recruiting Manager, and eventually Director. The challenge of leading and inspiring my team is both exciting and rewarding, especially when you see them achieve their goals within the company.

The recruiting world is ever-changing, and we’ve had to keep pace with trends like AI integration and the shifting job market. While many lean heavily on AI for screening resumes, Acara has taken advantage of these technological enhancements, but also retains the human touch in recruitment, a feature that sets us apart.

Challenges and Rewards

One of the most challenging aspects of my job is dealing with people, as they are unpredictable, and the market is constantly evolving. However, that unpredictability is what excites me the most. Each day brings new challenges, and I enjoy helping people secure jobs that help them provide for their families.

The human interaction, connection, and the element of surprise are things I love about my work. Whether it’s building strategies with clients or coaching my team, I feel a deep sense of purpose.

Acara’s Unique Culture

Life at Acara stands out compared to my previous roles due to the strong focus on work culture. I help organize events like food drives, team outings, and volunteer events for our Melbourne office. I’m also a member of the DEIB and Engagement Committees, where I collaborate with teams across the company, ensuring Acara fosters a supportive and inclusive environment.

What the Future Holds

The staffing industry is constantly evolving, and I foresee AI playing an even larger role over the next decade. However, Acara will continue to prioritize the human element in our recruitment processes, which helps us secure great talent.

Life Outside of Acara

When I’m not working, I’m busy with my family—my husband, our daughter Layla, who turns one in November, and our son, who’s due in February! We also have a 7-year-old Chiweenie named Otis, who’s a handful.

As a family, we love visiting zoos, animal parks, and going on outdoor adventures. I’m a big fan of Orlando City Soccer and the Buffalo Bills. I’ve had season tickets to Orlando City Soccer for six years now—no joke!

Balancing my job and family life requires a lot of organization, but I make sure there’s a strong work-life balance. That way, I can be fully present at work and fully engaged with my family when I’m home.

In Conclusion

Acara is more than just a workplace for me. It’s a place where I’ve grown personally and professionally. The company’s commitment to transparency, inclusiveness, and maintaining a strong work culture is what makes it unique. I look forward to seeing where this journey takes me, and I’m excited to continue making an impact both at Acara and in the lives of those I work with.

This month’s “All-In At Acara” employee spotlight features Nicole Conklin, who works out of our headquarters in Buffalo, New York. Nicole started with the team in 2021 as a Staffing Coordinator and today serves as a Regional Operations Lead. Learn more about Nicole’s day-to-day at Acara, what she loves most about the job, and what keeps her busy outside of the office.

Journey to Acara

I was born and raised in Springville, New York—a small town about 35-40 minutes south of the City of Buffalo. I went to school at Daemen College in Buffalo and majored in marketing and minored in entrepreneurship and public relations.

I graduated college at a tough time (2020) and ended up taking a job in marketing. It wasn’t exactly what I was looking for, but at the time I was just grateful to be employed and enjoyed the atmosphere. After about a year, I received a call about the position with Acara.

Life at Acara

I began at Acara as a Staffing Coordinator and am currently a Regional Operations Lead for the Northeast and Midwest. I assist candidates with the onboarding process so they can be cleared to start working for our clients. In addition to being responsible for my own work and success, I help others on the team and help answer any questions. “Managing chaos” is how we lovingly describe our day-to-day. My teammates make this job very easy, as they are all so self-driven and diligent.

I love that no workdays are ever the same. Because we work with so many different candidates and clients, I am always coming into new challenges or learning opportunities. I also really like the culture and office space in downtown Buffalo.

The most interesting part of my job is that I get to speak to people from all walks of life—engineers, accounting professionals, laborers, administrative assistants, and so many more! Helping people makes this job interesting and meaningful.

Industry Evolution

When I first started at Acara, we were still coming off the heels of COVID. Many people were remote, we were still wearing masks, and we tried to limit candidates coming into the office. Acara did everything they could to navigate these difficult times both internally for our staff and externally for our candidates and customers.

Ten years from now, I believe the staffing industry will look a little bit different—especially as AI begins to become more prevalent. Even so, I feel that the “people helping people” part of the industry will remain the same. Operations staff and recruiters will still need to build relationships with the candidates they are working with, and sales folks will still need that face-to-face time with the customers they support. You lose a lot of what makes this industry great when you take people out of the mix.

Life Outside of Acara

Outside of Acara, I teach dance a few nights a week at a studio in Hamburg, New York! This is so much more than just a part-time job as it helps fuel my creative side and keeps me busy most weeks/weekends. It also is an incredible feeling to teach at the studio I danced at for 16 years of my childhood.

I am also a huge New York Yankees fan. My dad is an even bigger fan than I am, and we would always spend time together watching games when I was a kid.  Now we watch games together on TV when we can, but we also try to travel to different ball parks to see them play.

In this month’s “All-In At Acara” employee spotlight, meet Zinah Muhanna! As Program Coordinator she focuses on supporting clients and overseeing daily operations. Life Before Acara

Growing up in a small town like Bolton, Ontario, and now living just a 15-minute walk from the Mississauga Acara office, my journey has been quite the adventure. I graduated from George Brown College with a degree in Fashion Management, driven by a passion for the creative aspects of the industry. However, I found myself unfulfilled and seeking more.

After college, I continued my path in the hospitality industry. Working in restaurants allowed me to pursue what I truly enjoyed: building genuine connections with clients and creating memorable experiences. But when COVID-19 impacted the restaurant industry, I knew it was time for a change. The opportunity to become a Staffing Coordinator at Acara presented itself, and I saw it as a perfect transition.

Joining the Team

The journey to Acara started with nurturing professional connections. Through a personal contact, I was introduced to Nigel Hapuarachchi, leading to an insightful coffee chat. Nigel’s positive remarks about Acara and the staffing industry intrigued me. Upon learning more about the Staffing Coordinator position, I felt it perfectly aligned with my skills and career goals. Researching Acara further, I found the company culture and brand recognition promising for my growth and development.

A Day in My Life

Recently promoted to Program Coordinator, my role involves supporting clients and overseeing daily operations. From generating cost proposals and creating work orders to supporting onboarding processes, building reports, and managing client relationships, my days are diverse and dynamic. Adapting to new platforms and enhancing the client experience are also key aspects of my job.

The Acara Difference

Life at Acara is distinctly different from my previous experiences. The environment, tasks, and interactions here are unique and exciting. What excites me the most is the opportunity to make a positive difference in others’ lives, a passion that initially drew me to the industry. Balancing multiple projects and deadlines can be challenging, but it’s an exhilarating part of the job.

Industry Evolution

The talent and staffing industry has evolved significantly in recent years, especially with technological advancements. Acara has kept pace by implementing user-friendly platforms for both clients and candidates, focusing on personalized services to differentiate ourselves in the market. Looking ahead, I believe technology will continue to streamline processes across industries, with automation and AI playing pivotal roles.

Personal Growth

My role at Acara has grown from a strong focus on operations and managing contractors as a Staffing Coordinator to enhancing the client experience as a Program Coordinator. My team-player mindset, attention to detail, and ability to manage tasks effectively have been instrumental in this journey.

The Best Part

What I look forward to the most each day is the collaborative environment and working with talented and supportive colleagues. Acara’s vibrant culture, rooted in shared values, open communication, and mutual respect, makes it a great place to work. My favorite feature of Acara’s office? The large windows and the beautiful view!

Life Outside of Acara

Every morning begins with a walk alongside my husband, Marco, and our dog, Shyla. Afterward, I practice yoga to energize myself for the day ahead.

Outside of work, I’m currently busy renovating our forever home, which involves a lot of planning! I also spend quality time with my family. People might not know by just looking at me, but I’m very creative. I love cross-stitching and making personalized cards, transforming raw materials into something beautiful. Additionally, I have a deep love and appreciation for wildlife and the natural world.

Balancing personal and professional responsibilities is crucial, and finding a routine that works for both helps maintain that balance. An ideal day off includes a long nature walk, unwinding with loved ones by catching up on our favorite shows or enjoying a movie. If money or time off were no object, I’d love to travel extensively. For food, history, and culture, I’d return to Italy. For awe-inspiring landscapes, New Zealand is at the top of my list.

Reflecting on my journey, I realize how each step, from my beginnings in hospitality to my current role at Acara, has prepared me for where I am today. Acara has not only been a place of professional growth but also a community where I can thrive and contribute meaningfully. I look forward to continuing this journey, making a positive impact, and growing alongside the incredible team at Acara.

In this month’s “All-In At Acara” employee spotlight, meet Crystal McAninch! As an Onboarding Specialist for Acara, Crystal is one of the first points of contact for our clients’ contingent workers. She ensures a smooth onboarding experience that sets them up for success even before their first day on the job. Learn more about how Crystal got her job with Acara and why she loves working for the company.

The Road to Acara

I grew up in Murdock, Kansas—a little bitty dot on the map—and recently moved from Lochbuie, Colorado to Burleson, Texas to be closer to family. I was a stay-at-home mom for many years. While raising the kids, I worked from home for my and my husband’s flooring company. After moving to Colorado, I ended up working for two different flooring installation companies.

During COVID, the company I was working for ended up closing its doors. I began my search for a new opportunity and found Acara. I submitted my resume and instantly loved the people I met during the interview process. I knew this would be a great fit.

Why Acara

After spending 20 years working in the flooring installation industry, I had concerns about transitioning to a different type of work—but it turns out that running a company for so many years prepared me for my current job duties at Acara.

As an Onboarding Specialist, I spend most of my day connecting with contract workers to help them complete the onboarding process. Once the contractor has finished all their requirements and verifications, I ensure their new hire paperwork is submitted on time. I continue to work with them as needed after they’ve started their assignment.

At Acara, I truly feel part of a team, even though we’re spread out all over the country. One of my favorite parts of the job is the relationships I’ve developed with coworkers, managers, and contractors. I love helping people get to work.

Life Outside of Acara

Outside of work, my family keeps me busy! I have 5 kids and 6 grandkids. Sometimes, being a wife, mother, and grandmother pulls me in many different directions, but I love my job and the flexibility it offers.

If money or time off were no object, I’d love to go back to Ethiopia and work with orphanages—there are so many kids who don’t know the love of parents and family. Then I would travel to Israel and Italy to see some of my dream destinations.
